The Eyes Have It

I have always read Psalm 17:8 as translated, “Keep me as the apple of your eye.” But recently while involved in my daily devotional study i came across the Christian Standard translation that read, “protect me as the pupil of Your eye.” being the curious fellow that I am I began to explore the possibilities of this slightly different reading. Scripture tells us we are fearfully and wonderfully made, and the human eye is no exception to the rule! My incredibly artistic niece, Myland drew the picture of an eye that I used for this blog. Thank you Myland.

There has never been a camera developed that can totally mimic the human eye, not even the latest Iphone. The pupil is the center portion of the eye in which light passes through to the lens. Without getting too technical, I thought of what it means to ask to be protected as the pupil of the eye. The eye is protected by the eyelid as a covering, a shield if you will. My shield of faith helps me to protect my spiritual eyes by covering the cornea. The cornea bends the light entering the eye. If it gets scarred or damaged, the way we see things is altered. Many times in scripture a reference to removing the scales from their eyes is used. I need God’s laser to allow me to see clearly His Kingdom ways. The scars and wounds of life impede my vision on life’s journey, without regular exams from the Great Physician, I am blinded by His love and attention to my circumstances. The colorful muscle around the pupil is the iris. It expands and contracts to allow more or less light to pass through the pupil into the lens and retina. Needless to say, this process is beyond wonder. So to ask God to protect me as the pupil of His eye, and knowing He will is encouraging to me. In Ephesians 1:18 the apostle Paul prays, “that the eyes of your heart may be enlightened so that you may know the hope of His calling, what is the wealth of his glorious inheritance of the saints.”

I pray this for anyone reading this as well. May you be flooded with His Glorious light and see the wonders of His love for you. Blessings
